12 Angry Men

Team Cake Poker WSOP dacakester

Ok kids, I'm not gonna lie, there are other tourneys in Vegas besides the WSOP and "dacakester" decided to partake in some of the festivities. He grinded the Caesar's Palace deep stack to a final table seat for 8 solid hours. In the end, after several much heated debates, the final 12 decided to choppy-chop for the wad. Mikey "dacakster" walked away with $850 and taught the non-Cakers a lesson!

Men Nguyen Offers Prop Bet at Psilocin's Table

Cake poker WSOP - Men Nguyen Props

Men Nguyen (pictured above) just approached table #181 where Psilocin is sitting. He pointed to the #2 seat, sitting on 5K chips and said "I bet anybody $1000 to $100 this guy makes the money". We immediately told #2 he should take the bet. It's the perfect hedge! But he declined.

Update: we just made the money! Everybody is good for $2,769. We've got at least 4-5 people still in.

Late night review

by LeeJones 9. July 2009 17:30

A few of us from the Cake organization swung by the Amazon Room late last night to see how people are progressing in Event #54. We spotted Gunners1 sitting on 25K chips, Ryan Hall holding his own, and this guy, ".01155":

We just got an email from him - he ended Day 1 with an extremely respectable 35K chips - he'll be a force to contend with tomorrow on Day 2.

At a nearby table was Psilocybin:

He was sitting on a happy little mushroom of 10K chips when I last looked.

Keep up the good work, folks - we're proud to have you all on Team Cake.

Before signing off for the night, I need to shout out to my friend (and Team PokerStars member) Hevad "RainKahn" Kahn. Hevad took a lot of flak for his behavior at the final table of the Main Event a few years ago. But c'mon - he was a kid sitting on the world's stage for the first time in his life. And after watching some of the superstars of our business, how could he possibly know what was appropriate behavior and what wasn't? Ever since then, he's been a model of good behavior at the poker table, and his ubiquitous smile is great for the game. Anyway, Hevad left his table to come over and say hi to me on the rail and give me a big bear hug. He's sporting a Zappa-esque look these days, which makes him even more charming. If one of our Cake guys can't win this thing, I hope Hevad does.

Cakers in Action

WSOP Event #54 is the final no-limit hold'em event before the $10K Big Dance, so it's last shout for the lower buy-in crowd. And the unofficial tally is somewhere around 2700 entrants. Team Cake is out there among the masses, and as the field thins a bit, we'll start focusing in on the survivors.

But speaking of survivors, we need to show you a picture of this guy, Ryan Hall:

Had we taken a vote at the Cake WSOP "Meet 'N Greet" last night (hereinafter known as "The Party"), Ryan would have won, hands down, the "Person most likely to need a blood transfusion the next morning" award. And yet when I bumped into him in the halls outside the Amazon Room, he was in good spirits and far better health than I would have ever expected. Not only that - he's got an 11K chip stack, courtesy of somebody trying to run his AK through Ryan's aces.

VeeRob is hovering around 3700 chips after, well, ducking a major catastrophe. He's at table #299 in the Miranda room if you want to go root for him. This picture was taken seconds before he ducked the catastrophe. Ask him for the details.

We'll keep the updates coming as we can find our players among the teeming masses.

If you're one of our players (or are in a player's entourage), you can help - hook into the Cake Twitter account at:

www.twitter.com/cakepoker

Tweet us your screen-name, table, seat, and chip count. Or send the same information to events@cakepoker.com. Keep the pipe full, folks - you're the news here!

Late update: a good-news Tweet from VeeRob:

“Guy ships for 2500 on my sb. I call with AsKs. He has AhQh. Final board Jh9h9dTs3s. Whew. Up to 5850.”

In English: "One of VeeRob's opponents pushed all-in with an ace and queen, both hearts. VeeRob called with the ace and king of spades. Before the flop, VeeRob was a healthy favorite. But the flop came down with two hearts, and then the turn gave VeeRob's opponent an open-end straight draw; it was a serious nail-biter for our hero. However, the river card was basically the one VeeRob would have picked given the choice, and so he's up to almost 6000 in chips.

The WSOP qualifiers are here!

by LeeJones 9. July 2009 17:18

The Cake players who qualified for WSOP events #54 (the last $1500 NLHE event) and the Big Dance ($10K NLHE final) are coming into town and have stopped by to get their registration materials.

We thought you'd like to meet a couple of them. This is "I_OWN_U_TODAY" (on the left) and his friend, Mike.

Team Cake Poker WSOP - I_OWN_U_TODAY

If it weren't for Mike, then I_OWN_U_TODAY wouldn't be playing in event #54 tomorrow. You see, Mike called IOUT and said, "Hey - Cake has a Gold Card satellite going right now - you just need a seven of clubs." IOUT was ten minutes from home in his car, so he stepped on it and got home right before the rebuy/add-on period was over. He continues the story...

"I had a bunch of seven of clubs, so I just started shoving all-in every chance I got. Then one time I shoved with J3 and flopped a jack and doubled up. At that point I started playing sanely. I built it up to about 50K chips. There was a guy that kept shoving preflop, and I was keeping an eye on him. Well, I got aces [editor's note: we all know where this is going...] and I limped in. He jammed for 50K chips! Of course, I immediately called. He had AJs, nothing bad happened, and I had 100K."

"There were two seats up for grabs, but by the time we got to the final table, I was the short stack. But the chip leader kept busting people left and right. Somehow, we got down to three of us. The short stack had 100K and jammed with K4 - the big stack woke up with 99 and busted him."

This is IOUT's first WSOP event. We expect first place in Event #54 to be over $500K and if IOUT wins it all, he's going to have to take Mike out for a nice dinner.

Here's Gunner1, from Norway, on the right, sitting next to yours truly:

Team Cake Poker WSOP - Lee Jones & Gunners1

Gunners1 is a major in the Royal Norwegian Air Force and carries himself like an air force major. That is, we don't think the "pressure" of the World Series of Poker is going to make him "nervous". In fact, we're not sure he knows the meaning of the words "pressure" or "nervous" - in English or Norwegian. Well, maybe if Arsenal is down by one goal with five minutes remaining, but we expect him to be one cool customer at the table.
