Buy Jason Mershon's new poker song and you can share in his WSOP winnings.
Poker is a tough business, and these days music is too - but that's not stopping Jason Mershon from mixing the two with his new poker song, "Playin' Poker For A Livin'."
A part-time pro poker player from Southern California with a long history in the music business, Mershon is offering a special "thank you" to the first 15,000 people to pony up the the $1.49 for his new tune: they'll share in 50% of whatever he wins if he can make the final table at the 2010 WSOP Main Event.
How much a percentage of Mershon's action is worth in the Main Event is debatable - he doesn't sport much of a tournament record, he'll only pay out if he makes the final table, and he says that most of his poker time is spent at the cash game tables. But recent history has shown that anyone can win big at the WSOP, so that pile of change you were thinking about using to buy a value meal might be worth as much as $300 if Mershon were to become the next world champion. And if nothing else, you'll have a new song to listen to every time you take a bad beat to bust from a tournament.
Those who do buy the song won't have to wonder all summer whether they've got any money coming to them: Mershon plans to post updates on Facebook and Twitter throughout the Main Event to keep his fans apprised of his progress.
Here's an interesting piece of trivia that might come in handy if you ever end up on Jeopardy! or Who Wants To Be A Millionaire: besides producing musicals like Getting Head and Rock and Roll Heaven, in the late 1960s Mershon replaced Alex Chilton as lead singer of chart-topping group The Box Tops. Chilton then went on to form Big Star, whose songs included "In The Street," which later became the theme song for the FOX television series That 70s Show.
